LB Recovery know that breaking down on a country road or in a rural location can be scary. However, it is one of the safest places to break down. The following tips are to help ensure your safety, but they are just a guide. You should always use your common sense and ensure that you and your passengers’ safety is your top priority whilst you wait for LB Recovery to attend.
- Think of other road users. They are your biggest danger.
- Get your vehicle off the road if possible, but beware of soft verges, ditches and blocking access
- Put on your hazard warning lights to warn other vehicles of the danger
- If you have a fluorescent or high visibility jacket, put it on so other road users can see you
- Get everyone out of the vehicle safely and to a safe position away from the road. Never stand between your vehicle and oncoming traffic or where you will block other vehicles seeing your hazard warning lights
- Make sure that children are comforted but kept under control
- If it’s safe to do so, put a warning triangle on the road at least 45 metres (about 4.5 bus lengths) behind your vehicle on the same side of the road. Take great care when putting a warning triangle out or getting it back and never use one on a motorway
- If it is dark or visibility is poor, keep your sidelights on if possible
- Stand in a safe position and never between your vehicle and oncoming traffic or where you will block other vehicles seeing your hazard warning lights
